Gary Shearston

Gary Shearston

Gary Shearston, one of Australia’s most respected singer/songwriters passed away at Armidale Hospital on Monday night 1st July after suffering a stroke at his home near Tenterfield.

In his youth Gary was one of Australia's most popular artists who released several landmark recordings and hosted his own television show as well as maintaining his live performances. Gary was a committed freedom fighter, priest, family man, performer and poet. He released over 15 albums and hundreds of songs highlighting his distinctive Australian perspective and voice.

His version of Cole Porter's 'I Get A Kick Out Of You' became an international chart success but his real passion was for his songs written to celebrate Australia. Over the past twelve years he released four albums Only Love Survives (2001), The Best Of All Trades (2009), Renegade (2011), The Great Australian Groove (2012) as well as the anthology Here & There, Now & Then (2007) through Rouseabout Records.

We celebrate his musical legacy, lament the passing of another Australian musical legend and offer our sympathies to his family.

Rouseabout label mate Jim Low posted this fitting tribute on from an interview he did with Gary in 2009:

Gary on Songs of Struggle

JIM LOW:   Many of the songs you wrote and sang in the 1960's were labelled 'songs of protest'. They covered a range of issues including attitudes to Aboriginal people, war and capital punishment. How important do you consider songs are in being able to inform people and influence their attitudes and behaviour?

GARY:   The Anglo-French historian, essayist and novelist, Hilaire Belloc, once wrote, "It is the best of all trades, to make songs, and the second best to sing them." I've always appreciated that observation. If I were to expand on it, I would probably say, "lt is the best of all trades, to make songs that inspire hearts, minds and souls to make the world a better place for every single human being inhabiting it, and the second best to sing them and hear others singing them." That's probably a bit long-winded, but you may get my general drift. Songs born of struggle invariably inspire ways of resolving the struggle that gave them birth. 'Songs of protest' can reveal hidden agendas, stamp them clearly in the consciousness of people from all walks of life, and lead them to consider, or re-consider, all sorts of ideological positions adopted by one crew or another. The truth will always out and, more often than not, the truth rings truest when carried on the wings of song.

Tributes

My deepest condolences on the loss of a wonderful man and a songwriter like no other.
(Anna Rose, Capital News/Northern Daily Leader)

Please accept my deep sorrow of hearing of Gary's passing. I have enjoyed playing his music over a long period of time. It saddens me greatly at this time. Condolences to all!
(Brian Amos, Radio Eastern 98.1)

I am so very, very sorry to hear this sad news. Gary and I had several wonderful conversations only a few weeks ago. My deepest condolences.
(Jill Fraser, Words on the Wind Communications)

It's sad news to learn that Gary passed away. I liked his songs and even more the ideal of freedom and justice that they conveyed. I am glad that I was recently able to publish a review of one of his latest albums "The Great Australian Groove" in le Cri du Coyote our French magazine, a modest way of bringing him to the attention of our readers. Please convey my sympathy to his family, knowing that he is now in that Kingdom for which he had been fighting for.
(Roland Lanzarone, RCF-Haute Normandie Radio / Le Cri du Coyote Magazine)

We have just heard the sad news about Gary Shearston’s passing and wanted to pass on our condolences to his friends and family. Gary was a big influence in Johnny’s life in the 60’s and 70’s and I certainly enjoyed my interview with him a few years back. A very talented man and he will be sadly missed. Our condolences and best regards.

(Glenys & Johnny Marcus, OPus-Music Country Radio)

It is with much sadness that I read this news.

Gary made a great impression on my life, and contributed strongly to my understanding of what a lifetime of work means.

We forged a friendship built from mutual respect. He was one of the most dedicated, and focused musician/songwriters I have ever had the privilege to work with. I had one of his songs ringing in my mind on Monday.

I will never forget the time we spent working together, and the conversations that emanated from the creative environment we shared.

I know that Gary has traveled to a comforting, and restful place before his next journey.
(Jorden Brebach, The Orange Room)

Charting her way through the Proudman maelstrom, Nina must also navigate her way through the complex and confusing rules of love.
