Kym Pitman

Latest Rouseabout & AntiPod Music signing Kym Pitman has a special place amongst Australian singer songwriters. Her songs and music are deeply an expression of place and ecological connection.

They inspire an enlivened sense of presence and emotional recognition of human experience and wild landscape -"a uniquely female, Australian perspective brimming with heart, spirit, experience and a love of country".

Based in Bellingen (NSW) Kym Pitman has been described by SMH’s Bruce Elder as ‘...a clear and pure voice... rustic and romantic.’ A regular on the folk music festival circuit her album Million Star Hotel is set for an August release.

Kym writes lyrics and music that dance with the spirit of the land and she sings them with rare grace & beauty.

Listen to the title track on this month’s edition of UCM Radio to hear why we’re thrilled to have her on our roster.

Gary Shearston

Gary Shearston, the father of Australian folk & king of the heap has just finished recording a new studio album aptly titled Renegade. As with the 2009 release The Best of All Trades the album was recorded by Restless Music’s Roger Ilott who is “extremely happy with the results” and will be mixed by Jorden Brebach.

Gary is in prolific songwriting form and again as with Trades his latest batch are as good as anything he has written. Renegade features Lee Williams on bass (& guitars) and making his recording debut Luke Shearston on drums giving the songs The Great Australian Groove Gary has always wanted, with able contributions also from Roger Ilott, Penny Davies & Jordan Davies-Ilott.

The Celebrated Knackers + Knockers Band

Rouseabout Records has released two restricted triple-R CDs of bawdy songs by The Celebrated Knackers and Knockers Band.

Titled Sing Us Anothery, Dirty As Buggery and Rooted in the Country, the songs on the albums are very politically incorrect - racist, homophobic, sexist and every other taboo - and all collected from Australia’s rugby, bushwalking and rabblerousing past, and an important record of our disappearing colloquial language. These albums are sure to offend, shock (and entertain) whilst saluting our musical past as they represent the first comprehensive collection of Australian bawdy songs and verse.

Tony Hillier from The Weekend Australian writes “As a legacy of the lewder side of Australia’s artistic heritage, award-winning folklorist Warren Fahey’s risqué companion CDs are of genuine historical value and certainly several cuts above Kevin Bloody Wilson’s albums. Exposure will evoke raucous laughter and have listeners singing along with these hoary old chestnuts. Certainly, Fahey’s latest and bravest offering is in danger of receiving a rap on the knuckles from the PC police.”

The CDs are accompanied by scholarly (and hilarious) booklet notes and feature sensational cover art by James P. Gilmour who has also produced two flash cartoons that will be used as part of a viral email campaign. Check out ‘Last Night I Pulled My Pud’ here.

The Celebrated Knackers & Knockers Band will soon reveal details of their albums launch.
Look and listen out for The Celebrated Knackers & Knockers Band on ABC Local Radio & Radio National, FBi 94.5, 2MBS, 2MAX FM, Folk Trax, 5EBI, HotFM106.7 Mildura, the Australian Folklore Network & community radio folk programs nationwide plus in the Sydney Morning Herald & The Australian.

Mic Conway’s National Junk Band

Mic Conway’s National Junk Band has just returned from performing at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival to full houses and rave reviews.

Writes the Independent Weekly’s Teri Louise Kelly…

“The mind boggles. Try to envisage The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, Bing Crosby, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band and David Copperfield all on stage together with four ukuleles, two kitchen sinks, a washboard, a garbage can and a couple of saws (yes, saws) doing political satire meets junk band blues and calling the Charles Darwin Evolutionary Sweepstakes in-between (homosapiens won by a nose hair). Really it can't be done justice in words alone. Go see it ... somewhere. Junk is the word.”

Adelaide Now’s Peter Burdon adds

“The long-time fans were out in force, along with a new generation of enthusiastic followers reveling in the band's amazing collection of absurd instruments. The tunes are great, mostly original, and with the occasional ring-in, Monty Python's Galaxy Song and Nagasaki among them. Inspired silliness, not to be missed.”

Next stop for Mic is the Melbourne Cabaret Festival where he & Robbie Long will be presenting "The Masochism Tango Show".

Southend

By popular demand, Southend’s classic rave anthem ‘Take Me Up’ has been remixed by UK trance legends Binary Finary, Australia’s still undisputed queen of hard house BeXta and Perth based electronic maestros Projekt Inertia (recently signed to AntiPod Music Publishing).

When BeXta played her remix on BAM Radio, the feedback was massive with over 100 listeners emailing to find out where they can buy it. Projekt Inertia’s mix is also receiving rave reviews on their soundcloud site, whilst for a short time only you can download Binary Finary’s remix for free at www.binary-finary.com.

All three mixes are now available on iTunes with Xelon Entertainment also coming on board for further digital distribution through the likes of Beatport, Trackitdown & Juno.

Look and listen out for Southend on BAM Radio, Beats Media, Soul of Sydney and this month’s edition of UCM Radio.
