Eric Bogle

‘National living treasure’ Eric Bogle has just returned home after a mammoth 88 date tour of North America and the UK promoting his latest and possibly last studio album The Dreamer (which is up there with his best ever work) along with his first ever DVD Live at Stonyfell Winery which offers 21 songs - all introduced by Eric and features his long time musical partner John Munro along with Emma Luker, Dominic Steele, Peter Tichborne and Jon Jones. Recorded in March this year the program has golden oldies and some newly written songs.

The tour was a remarkable success with sold-out audiences everywhere he played. Australian audiences can now look forward to him gracing the stage in early 2010. As Capital News’ Jon Wolfe writes ‘if you haven’t seen him live, put it on your to-do list and immerse yourself in the majesty of Eric Bogle and his music’. Watch this space for more details.

Look and listen out for Eric Bogle in Capital News, Trad & Now, WA’s Irish Scene, The Border Mail, Sydney Morning Herald, Blarney Bulletin, Tsunami Magazine, Simply Australia and on ABC Local Radio, Radio National and community radio nationwide especially Bay FM, 2OCN, 6NR, 3RRR, 2BLU, 3PVR, 2REM, 2BAB, 3INR, 4BAY, 3WYN, 2SEA, 2LVR, 2BAR, 2WET, 3SCB, 2EAR, 2RDJ & 6MKA.

Both The Dreamer (RRR47) and Live at Stonyfell Winery (RRR48) are available at retail through MGM Distribution as well as Folk Trax, Trad & Now and directly from Undercover Music via mail order. Fans can also now download the best of Bogle’s back catalogue Singing The Spirit Home which has been released online through MGM.

Gary Shearston

“It is the best of all trades, to make songs, and the second best to sing them.” Few do it better than Gary Shearston in a career spanning over five decades. His new double album is par excellence.

Writes Capital News’ Keith Glass Gary has here a document that should finally place him in the pantheon of our greatest song commentators. Bruce Elder from the SMH says Remarkable! 24 new songs set against a wonderfully rich backdrop of acoustic, slide and electric guitars. Shearston’s songwriting and music have not been blunted by age.

Especially well received by community radio nationwide Gary Shearston has been selected by Amrap and their Music Director Alliance for eligibility to an exciting new Amrap service called ‘AirIT’. Check out https://www.amrap.org/airit for more details.

Look and listen out for Gary Shearston in Northern Daily Leader, Trad & Now, Blarney Bulletin, Herald Sun and on ABC Wollongong, 2CCR, Highland FM and community radio nationwide.

Gary Shearston was also recently featured on SBS TV’s ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ earlier this month.

Warren Fahey

Congratulations to Rouseabout raconteur numero uno, Warren Fahey, whose 10 CD box set Australia: Folk Songs & Bush Verse released through ABC Music/Universal Music Australia has been nominated for Best World Music Album at this year’s ARIA’s.

In 2010 Rouseabout will be releasing two restricted triple-R CDs of bawdy songs by Warren and some of his musical mates. Titled Rooted in the Country and Rooted in the Country – Again!

The songs on the albums are very politically incorrect - racist, homophobic, sexist and every other taboo - and all collected from Australia’s rugby, bushwalking and rabblerousing past, and an important record of our disappearing colloquial language.

These albums are sure to offend, shock (and entertain) whilst saluting our musical past – something Warren knows a thing or two about. The CDs will be released in conjunction with Warren Fahey's next book 'Sing Us Anothery, Dirty As Buggery', a detailed study of the bawdy song and poem in the Australian tradition.

Mic Conway's National Junk Band

Mic Conway has been a very busy roving vaudevillian. August saw Mic and guitarist Robbie Long riding a big steel bird north to the Darwin Festival. There they plied their wares to a sold out crowd in The Lighthouse - rubber chickens flew, fire billowed. Visiting local schools, Mic also demonstrated his rubber-glove bassoon and home-made instruments as part of the broader reach of the Festival to the wider community.

He hit the road again in September, taking the old props-filled van south to Victoria where he toured his multi-faceted shows for young people to schools in regional Victoria and Melbourne. Three shows per day were not quite enough to exhaust his tongue-in-cheek talents and inexplicable energy. He again teamed up with Robbie Long over the weekend for "The Masochism Tango Tour" - performing in South Melbourne, The Theatre Royal in Castlemaine, and as part of "The Crimson Goat Cabaret Club" at the Athenaeum Theatre.  Victorians have been asking again and again for Mic and the Junk Band to visit their lands.

Stripped back, irreverent and shameless, this show is full of idiosyncratic tunes that are close to Mic's heart. He has always loved and collected songs with bizarre titles (most notably "My Canary Has Circles under It's Eyes). In duo mode he has added  ditties including "I Love the Back of Your Neck", "Never Bite a  Married Woman on the Thigh" and yes, an hilarious and fire-fuelled  rendition of Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango".

The Junk Band has been invited to Forth Valley Blues Festival in TASMANIA 21st March 2010.

Back in Sydney, The National Junk Band has been at the coalface... They had a great night in Manly at the beautiful "Star of the Sea Theatre". It was great to see so many new faces plus lots of belly-laughs emanating from the audience all through the night. One couple was so overwhelmed by the experience they hatched the idea of the Junk Band performing at their wedding!!

The band has also, for the first time, been invited to PEATS RIDGE FESTIVAL.

FRIDAY NIGHT (9 Oct), the band will tumble onto the stage of The Heritage Hotel in Bulli, for an evening of colourful mayhem, unexpectedly bizarre acts and some very funny songs. ABC Illawarra - "Drive" with Nick Rheinberger will be featuring the band live in the studio on Friday arvo/eve before the show.

Tour Dates: See top left for dates and venues.

The boys have been busy lately remixing the likes of The Presets, Infusion & Zoot Woman as well as performing live including supporting Peaches on her recent tour.

3D World describes SOUNDITOUT as ‘in the mould of The Presets, these boys are a serious force to be reckoned with’. www.mediasearch.com.au goes further sounditout are in one word brilliant. Their EP is cool and unconventional and their sound is something we've never heard before while The Place declare their debut EP ‘dance release of the month for sure – amazingly high in quality and production’.

Southend

After having three tracks licensed by Ministry of Sound for ‘Rave Anthems’, the early 90’s techno rave legends who brought you ‘The Winner Is…’, ‘Take Me Up’, ‘The Dream’ and the 2004 remix of Vagen’s ‘Buggin’’ Southend’s entire back catalogue (including previously unreleased material) is now available online through iTunes.

Southend launched the online release with a DJ set of original material at ‘Sunrise’ – an evening of morning anthems put on by the crew who brought you ANTHEM and FANTASIA at the Burdekin Hotel in Sydney to a sold out crowd who went absolutely bonkers. Needless to say they have been asked back for the next installment later this year.

After a few years hiatus Southend are about to re-enter the studio to work on new tunes to be released in 2010.

Check out this month’s UCM Radio for a taste!
