Kym Pitman
Kym Pitman’s Million Star Hotel continues to win the plaudits of those in the know.
Capital News’ Matt Lawrence suggests “casual, cool, calming and evocative. The clarity of the vocal and its delicate approach serve perfectly to carry the vast landscapes painted by the lyrics. Same can be said of the subtle instrumentation. To highlight particular tracks really would do a disservice to the album as a whole. Just know it really is food for the soul and best consumed complete. Definitely deserving of many a listen/repeat exploration.”
Not surprisingly Kym has been nominated for Best New Talent at this year’s Victorian & National Country Music Awards 2011 held as part of this month’s Whittlesea Country Music Festival.
Kym performed at Tamar Valley Folk Festival in Tasmania as well as a fantastic gig at Acoustic Peacock in Willunga, SA last month with more gigs soon to be announced including her show at the Armidale Club on February 11th.

Gary Shearston
Gary Shearston has been a major influence on Australian music for some five decades. In a society where we are conditioned to take music for granted, as yet another dismissible commodity, Gary's music has stood the biggest test of all - the test of time.
“This new collection of songs by the doyen of Australian folkies will not disappoint. Here are marvellous songs about Shearston’s trouble-laden career (Truth Is), his deep affection for the artist Martin Sharp (Paint Me A Painting, Painter) and the great writer and folklorist Edgar Waters (His Name Was Edgar Waters), all sung with Shearston’s distinctive delivery and saturated with Australian imagery. Shearston is a genuinely great songwriter. Anyone who can write something as persuasive as And a Butcherbird Overhead Sang, a very Australian song about suicide, is a national treasure.”
(Bruce Elder, SMH, February 2011)
Renegade features Lee Williams on bass (& guitars) and making his recording debut, Gary’s son Luke Shearston on drums, with able contributions also from Roger Ilott, Penny Davies & Jordan Davies-Ilott. The album was mixed by Jorden Brebach (The Church, You Am I, Grinspoon, Dappled Cities, gB3) and mastered by William Bowden.
Gary Shearston launched Renegadewith a special performance in his home town of Tenterfield at the School of Arts in November 2010 described by the manager (who has overseen years & years & years of concert presentations) as the best ever at the venue. A nice compliment, indeed!
Look & listen out for Gary Shearston in the Sydney Morning Herald, Trad & Now, Australian Options, Simply Australia and on 2CH, 2BAB, 2BAR, 2BAY, 2BBB, 2BLU, 2BOB, 2BRW, 2CBD, 2CCC, 2CCR, 2CHR, 2COW, 2EAR, 2GCR, 2GLF, 2HHH, 2MAX, 2MCE, 2SER, 2TEN, Tune! Eric Bogle
Rouseabout Records is pleased to announce the digital release of A Few Old Songs For Very New Times which features 32 songs from Bogle's back catalogue not contained on Singing The Spirit Home (also available digitally through iTunes) hand picked by Eric himself.
Eric Bogle’s songs are as relevant today as when they were written and this compilation is a must have for any Bogle fan.
Eric has also been confirmed as a headliner at the 45th National Folk Festival being held during the Easter long weekend in April 2011 where he will grace the ANZAC Day Concert with his timeless songs.
Listeners of Richard Glover’s ABC 702 Sydney’s Drive show were treated with typical Bogle wit, humour & humility when Eric was interviewed on the show on Friday 11th February.
His most recent studio album The Dreamer continues to receive airplay across the country, a song from which is featured on this month’s edition of UCM Radio.

The Celebrated Knackers and Knockers Band
Warren Fahey’s disgustingly funny albums Sing Us Anothery, Dirty As Buggery (RRR50) and Rooted In The Country (RRR51) released under the collective guise of The Celebrated Knackers & Knockers Band are the first comprehensive collection of Australian bawdy songs and verse ever released.
Here’s what Trad & Now’s P.J.Whyte had to say about Sing Us Anothery, Dirty As Buggery in the January edition;
“Wooo, you can tell by the sleeve that this record is gunna hurt. For those of you who crave a bawdy ballad nite with your mates, maybe a few beers and a sizzling BBQ, this album is a must. There are 29 bawdy ballads covering all kinds of subject best left to your imagination. There is something for everyone. The Players are a talented bunch. The production is slick. This CD is a must for your collection. Hide it from the kids and get into it on that special occasion that requires some Aussie BAWD played and presented for your listening pleasure.”

Russell Morris
Russell Morris has been confirmed to appear alongside the likes of Allan Jackson, Miranda Lambert & Kasey Chambers at CMC Rocks the Hunter 2011 in what is the biggest line-up of international country music stars ever seen in Australia.
2011 looks as though it is going to be another busy year, as Russell will not only be working solo, but also touring with Darryl Cotton and Jim Keays as well as Brian Cadd.
Cadd is currently in Paris finishing a country album that Russell and he started last year which they are both very exited about.
Having just returned from Abu Dhabi where he played an Australia Day concert for the Australian consulate, Russell is also still endeavouring to finish a blues album, which he is very passionate about. It is a project he has wanted to do for a long time and may well be out on Rouseabout Records later this year.

Mic Conway’s National Junk Band
Mic Conway has just been awarded "Artist of the Year" by Port Fairy Folk Festival! This is a big honour for him, and he is feeling quite bashful about it, as you can imagine. The announcement was made to him and to the world on Derek Guille's radio show last Friday night.
Woodford, yes!
The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band SHOW will be doing 4 shows at Woodford this year. The good folks at Woodford were the ones who approached Mic earlier this year, and asked if it would be possible for the Matchbox songs to be presented as part of the festival's 25th Anniversary celebrations. An 8-piece band was formed around Conway’s Mic and Jim. The little warm-up gig at the Cat n Fiddle last month in Sydney started an earthquake which is currently moving across the land. The pub was packed. The band will perform in Sydney again – this time, in a much larger venue. Stay tuned...
Matchbox Re-ignited will also appear at the 2011 Blue Mountains Folk Festival, BluesFest at Byron Bay alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, BB King & Elvis Costello where they will perform songs from Smoke Dreams which has been included in a new publication 100 Best Australian Albums.
Meanwhile Mic Conway’s National Junk Band return to the 2011 Port Fairy Folk Festival via a new cabaret-styled venue called “Revolt” in Melbourne. Check out the gig guide for all the details.
