Gary Shearston
“Gary Shearston is an icon of Australian folk,” (Jack Humphrys, Australian Options) and has been a major influence on Australian music for some five decades. In a society where we are conditioned to take music for granted, as yet another dismissible commodity, Gary's music has stood the biggest test of all - the test of time.
Gary’s new album Renegade continues to be well received by radio and in the press. David Long from Radio Adelaide’s ‘Folk Show’ understatedly suggests “many thanks for the CD which we have added to the play list. Very different from his previous albums, which shows there is plenty left in the talent of the man.”
Trad & Now’s Jim Low adds “if Gary regards himself as a renegade, it’s probably because he has always been ready to stand up and say what he believes, despite the consequences. The musical arrangements differ from the more sparsely-sounding The Best of all Trades. The rich sound gives an edge to many of the songs. Let’s hope that Gary Shearston continues to write and sing his songs and “keep tabs on all the wrongs” for many years to come.”
Bruce Elder from the Sydney Morning Herald concurs “This new collection of songs by the doyen of Australian folkies will not disappoint. Shearston is a genuinely great songwriter. Anyone who can write something as persuasive as And a Butcherbird Overhead Sang, a very Australian song about suicide, is a national treasure.”

Mic Conway
From www.nationaljunkband.com: Here we are, on the other side of two sensational nights at the Cell Block Theatre where Captain Matchbox was re-ignited in Sydney town to packed houses screaming, cheering and even shedding tears of joy.
Next stop Melbourne. The re-ignited Captain Matchbox will be performing at one of their old haunts - Ormond Hall (just south of the CBD on St Kilda Rd, beside the Belgium Beer Cafe) for 3 performances: 3, 4, 5 June. This is unlikely to ever be repeated, so don’t miss this rare chance to experience the songs, silliness and satire of the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. And yes, there will be a few surprise guests on stage for these Melbourne shows.
In other news, Mic has been invited to be a panelist on Spicks and Specks (ABC TV) ... he visited Melbourne last week and the show is now in the can, to be aired later in the year. He closed the show with one of his new songs "Jug Band Man", performed 'live' with Robbie Long and Liz Frencham. Mic and Robbie have just recorded a duo album Street of Dreams which they will be launching this nationally in spring 2011.
Also, just announced... Robert Crumb is coming to Australia! He was in need of a band, so Mic and Jim and the new Matchbox gang have stepped up to perform with him the old songs that are very close to their 1920s hearts.

The Celebrated Knickers & Knockers Band
The hilariously funny animated video of ‘Last Night I Pulled My Pud’ by James P Gilmour is now on Undercover Music’s YouTube Channel.
The ditty is taken from Sing Us Anothery, Dirty As Buggery (RRR50) which along with companion album Rooted In The Country (RRR51) are the first dedicated albums of Australian verse and song compiled by our very own Major Bumsore who bears a striking resemblance to Australian folk lore icon and raconteur Warren Fahey.
Both albums are out now through MGM Distribution or directly from Undercover Music via mail order.More Information: Artist Page |
