Marcus Holden

Marcus Holden’s new album The Brolga is set for a July/August release on Rouseabout Records.
The follow up to his critically acclaimed Cicadas & Roses, the album title is again based around a print done by his mum Patti, which will be featured on the album’s cover.
Says the composer, producer & multi-instrumentalist himself; “I very pleased with this one and being my own harshest critic it's tricky to know when to stop. I've used a number of other players so it's got a bit more breadth.”
Like its predecessor, The Brolga features classics from Satie, Bach, Rimsky-Korsakov, Bartok and many more re-interpreted by Holden to create approachable, contemporary and interesting sounds along with an original composition ‘Trying To Get To Sleep

Down by the Billabong

DOWN BY THE BILLABONG
Acoustic Guitar Arrangements of Australian Folk Songs and Bush Tunes

For over 40 years Executive Producer Warren Fahey has wanted to produce an album that would inspire young guitar players. Down by the Billabong features John Kane, David Hyams, Kate Burke, Michael Fix, Nigel Date, Marcus Holden, Daniel Champagne, Jeff Lang, Kieran Ryan-Colton, Marcus Sturrock, John Munro, Dave O’Neill and Ian Date and has been very warmly received by industry tastemakers and media.

In a 4.5 star review The Weekend Australian’s Tony Hillier writes “Down by the Billabong finally brings to fruition a concept hatched four decades ago by Australia’s foremost folkloric authority. As part of his lifelong mission to explore the national ethos through music, project curator Warren Fahey has persuaded some of the country’s most respected acoustic guitarists to record their own selections and arrangements of tunes from the folk-bush archives.

Connoisseurs of quality guitar playing will find the resultant compilation compulsive listening, with the repetitive nature of melody and inherent simplicity of rhythm associated with many classics of the genre and era bringing out the best of the interpreters in terms of imagination and dexterity.”

Twang Talk’s Burt Everett enthuses “the songs may be old, but the versions certainly are not. This is a must for lovers of acoustic guitar music who like to trip down memory lane whilst accepting the fact that the lane may take some unexpected turns. Thank you Mr Fahey for this little gem.”

You’ve certainly got the pick of the crop here I'll look forward to playing it on air” suggests VOX FM’s Russell Hannah; “I have played several tracks of this great album on Radio Adelaide Folk Show and the Community Radio Folk Show” adds David Long whilst Australian County Music’s John Nutting declares “a fine album!”.

Down by the Billabong scored album of the week on ABC Radio National’s The Daily Planet https://www.abc.net.au/…/cd-of…/down-by-the-billabong/7245818, 2BOB-FM and has been featured on ABC Local Radio’s Australia All Over with Macca.

Down by the Billabong is OUT NOW on CD through MGM Distribution or directly from Undercover Music via mail order and digitally through iTunes.

JIM LOW

“Jim’s songs deserve to be heard. They are genuine story songs that have a direct link to this land and this precious culture of ours.” (Warren Fahey, OAM)

Singer-songwriter and Australian musical historian Jim Low launched his latest album Journey’s End at the Ivanhoe Hotel in Blackheath last month with co-producer Jason Roweth accompanying him on guitar and Pat Drummond officially launching the CD.

Hobart FM’s Tim Kingston sums up the consensus from music industry tastemakers “… great album.” Highland FM’s Bob Cady concurs “it’s a great CD of new Australian folk and I will be playing it on my show” sentiments echoed by Home-Grown Country’s Ian Crombie … “Jim’s album has some great stories. Jim has an easy vocal and presents the songs well. I will definitely be adding tracks to my playlist.” Bay FM’s Jan Nary says “I love Jim’s stuff. You can be sure Journey’s End will be played right through on my show” while Australian Country’s John Nutting has “put the title track on high rotation.”

2MCE’s Bruce Cameron adds… “I was listening to the album again this morning, this time while reading the lyrics.  To be honest, when I listen to a CD the first time I often do just that - listen - before checking out the sleeve notes and back stories.  There are some beautiful narratives in there which Jim’s gentle delivery suits so well.  His voice hasn't aged a bit.  How does he do it?

We’ll give the final word to Anna Rose. In her Revealing Australian histories feature in the Northern Daily Leader she writes “There’s always a sense of anticipation when I receive a new album by Jim Low. A true storyteller, Jim gets you in with his words and weaves a spell so you really do take a journey out of your lounge room. Jim’s songs reveal more than a little of Australia’s history. If you were to gather together the albums he’s produced to date, you would have a fairly accurate picture of some of Australia’s significant places, people and events. His music could be introduced into high school curriculums to make stodgy old stories come to life. Each track of the 15 is a gem in itself, have a listen. You too, will be entranced.”

Jim’s next gig is on Friday 10th June at Dukes Place in Marrickville, Sydney.

Listen out for Jim Low on 2SER, ArtSound FM, Radio Eastern 98.1, BAY FM 100.3 FM ACOUSTIC HARVEST, ZFM Country, the Hume Travel Network, Radio16.com.au, 1629am Newcastle, Australian Country, Hobart FM, Highland FM 107.1, Kalamunda Community Radio/KCR 102.5FM, 2Maxfm 91.3, Radio Adelaide, Monaro FM, Country Roads, City Park Radio 7LTN, 3WAY-FM Great Ocean Radio, Hills Radio 88.9 FM, Whitehorse Boroondara fm Community radio, Gin Gin's Own 104.9Fm, HUON FM, 99.9 Voice FM, Coonamble Community Radio, 2AirFm, 5EFM, 2RRR, 3MCR, 94.7 The Pulse, Radio Mama 100.5fm, Albany Community Radio, 7MID, Burnett River Radio 91.5 fm. PAUL HOLDEN

Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Paul Holden, one of Australia’s finest & most loved DJ’s and dance music pioneers who tragically passed away last month.

Tributes have justifiably flown thick and fast from all corners of Australia’s dance music fraternity not least from so many of his adoring fans, many of whom turned out in force to celebrate Paul's life at a Tribute Party held in his honour at Home on Thursday 5th May 2016. It was a night for the ages and a fitting farewell.

A stalwart of the 80s, 90s and 2000s Sydney dance music scene, Paul Holden started DJing in 1980, later working as an event and music producer and featured at major events such as the Big Day Out and Field of Dreams, and clubs integral to Sydney’s dance music scene. Paul was also a frequent DJ at gay and lesbian events, including the Mardi Gras, the Bacchanalia parties of the 1980s (which he was also co-promoter) and the Sleaze Ball parties.(Source: https://www.sydneyravehistory.com/#!rip-paul-holden/c2tt)

Southend’s Stu McCarthy who worked with Paul on numerous productions and remixes including his German club hit ‘Honey Buzz’ paid tribute to his colleague and friend of over thirty years “From Danceteria in the late eighties to Bacchanlia & Stun! in the nineties plus far too many raves to mention, Paul Holden played a major part in igniting so many punters’ passion for dance music and partying, mine very much included. There were never more smiling faces on a dancefloor than when Paul was on song. That’s what the art of DJ’ing is all about. So many happy memories, rave on Paul!”

#raiseyourhands

You can listen to Honey Buzz and Paul Holden’s remix of Southend’s ‘If You Believe’ in the latest edition of Undercover Radio.
