Welcome to Undercover Music News

The latest edition of Undercover Radio features Tiwi voices past & present from Ngarukurwala’s November release Ngiya awungarra – I am here, now, brand new music from Marcus Holden, songs from Eric Bogle’s new album with John Munro, Jim Low & CODA.

Marcus Holden

Marcus Holden

Marcus Holden is an artist who has appeared in over five hundred recordings and plays all bowed string instruments, mandolin, guitar, banjo, piano, qin, cittern, tenor guitar, dobro, the musical saw & percussion.

His new album The Brolga is now set for a November 4 release on Rouseabout Records.

The follow up to his critically acclaimed Cicadas & Roses, the album title is again based around a print done by his mum Patti, which will be featured on the album’s cover.

Says Marcus himself… “I am very pleased with this one and being my own harshest critic it's tricky to know when to stop. I've used a number of other players so it's got a bit more breadth. I'm really looking forward to the next installment of my musical journeys.”

Like its predecessor, The Brolga features classics from Satie, Bach, Rimsky-Korsakov, Bartok and many more re-interpreted by Holden to create approachable, contemporary and interesting sounds along with an original composition ‘Trying to Get to Sleep’.

With Holden’s musical output absolutely prolific at present the digital release will feature an additional 18 tracks including 10 originals from this soloist, composer, producer & multi-instrumentalist.

NGARUKURUWALA

Tiwi songs are items of significant Australian musical heritage that we should all be proud of. Since 2007, Ngarukuruwala (we sing songs), have shared musical ideas to create new versions of old Tiwi songs. In 2009, Tiwi elders visited AIATSIS in Canberra to reclaim recorded Tiwi ethnographic material, collected by anthropologists over the last century. Exploring musical, cultural and emotional intuitions, Ngarukuruwala have created a series of responses to those recordings. Some are spontaneous ideas, others loosely arranged and some are intricately produced. The result is therefore multi-stylistic and truly unique, with the sounds of the Tiwi bush and of the archives threading it all together.

Ngiya awungarra – I am here, now (RRR75) is OUT November 18 digitally through iTunes and on CD through MGM Distribution or directly from Undercover Music via mail order.

JIM LOW

Jim Low, who wrote and sang the song ‘Tilly Aston Knew’, which is used for the motion sensor audio at the Tilly Aston Centre in Carisbrook, visited Carisbrook on September 23.

Carisbrook Historical Society members welcomed Jim and his wife Valda, and showed him where his work is being heard. He produced the song especially for the memory of Tilly Aston and for Carisbrook.

Jim lives in the Blue Mountains. And he has recorded many songs that tell an important story.

“I only became aware of Tilly Aston a few years ago when visiting the Victorian Museum. My curiosity led me to seek out and read her memoirs and collections of poetry. Her life achievements in helping those with little or no sight were inspiring. As a result I wrote my song about her. I enjoy singing it to others as it spreads the word about this remarkable woman and her legacy. I am really delighted and honoured to have the song included in Carisbrook’s memorial to her.”

Vision Australia has assisted Jim and he praises their expertise.

“Back in 2005 I purchased a CCTV system. It has successfully allowed me to continue reading, despite my now very limited vision. My failing eyesight is due to a degenerative condition known as Fuchs Dystrophy. Like most resources for a disability, the reading system did not come cheaply.”

Vision Australia has helped Jim with getting in touch with the right people when he has had issues. (Source: Carisbrook Mercury)

DOWN BY THE BILLABONG
Acoustic Guitar Arrangements of Australian Folk Songs and Bush Tunes

Down by the Billabong featuring John Kane, David Hyams, Kate Burke, Michael Fix, Nigel Date, Marcus Holden, Daniel Champagne, Jeff Lang, Kieran Ryan-Colton, Marcus Sturrock, John Munro, Dave O’Neill and Ian Date was put together by Warren Fahey to inspire young guitar players.

The album continues to win the plaudits of critics. In another glowing review Sydney Morning Herald’s John Shand writes “So how to save and even popularise a vital slice of our culture and oral history? Warren Fahey's ingenious solution was to invite a host of guitarists of different ages and musical backgrounds to create instrumental versions of 24 such pieces of music. The simple act of paring them back to solo acoustic renditions is enough for the songs to be heard anew, as if their inner light is being bent through a prism.”

Trad&Now’s Ian Dearden labels the album “extraordinary and magisterial. This amazing project features a roll call of extraordinarily talented and innovative Australian guitarists. This is an album you can leave on loop, and hear something new each time you listen to the tunes come around, and around again!! An amazing tribute to the winning combination of Australian guitar talent and Australian songs and tunes.”

Down by the Billabong scored album of the week on ABC Radio National’s The Daily Planet, 2BOB-FM and has been featured on ABC Local Radio’s Australia All Over with Macca. It continues to be playlisted on community radio across the country especially BAY FM 100.3 FM ACOUSTIC HARVEST, 2AIR, Nambucca Valley Radio 2nvr 105.9fm & UGFM - Radio Murrindindi

Down by the Billabong is OUT NOW on CD through MGM Distribution or directly from Undercover Music via mail order and digitally through iTunes.
